Community Advocacy in Azubbie Okujagu Community Rivers State by @Pigdgreen

NIGERIA – 12TH OCTOBER- 2015 - The organization Prime Initiative for Green Development (PIGD) is registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission of Nigeria as a non-political, non-profit making and non-governmental organization, with a mission to champion the effort of eradicating environmental hazards by creating Environmental sustainability awareness on Climate Change thereby, mitigating the effect of climate change on the vulnerable populace.

Prime Initiative for Green Development (PIGD) was established in Nigeria with the aim of building an environment free of pollution to ensure environmental sustainability and gender injustices on social rights of women, youths in the society.

The executive Director of PIGD Mr. ThankGod Tito Uzomah and team visited Azubie Okujagu a coastal community in Port Harcourt city local government area in Rivers State, A small community with divergent challenges.

The local Chief AdolpShus S.B.C. Okujagu. He told us the challenges the community is face with respect to portable water, environmental pollution, and terrible waste management process from the industrial activities companies within the area and total neglect of basic infrastructure by government.

We went into the local community to interview some of the inhabitants/ indigenes to view first hand some of their complaints. Our first respondents is a 19 years old youth whose name is Prince. He send that potable water is a luxury they do not enjoy in Azuobie and that the level of environmental depredation they are facing is in-human.

Mary king another respondent on the other hand complained of human waste and difficulty in getting portable water for simple domestic activities.

Emmanuel pleads with relevant authority to come to the community’s aid in terms of providing of water, clearing of rivers of pollution so that they can resume their fishing business because all the fishes are either dead or migrated due to the pollution of the rivers.

Lovely, a young lady complained of environmental depredate and lack of portable water, she said when the river over-flows its banks due to heavy rain-fall, it usually carries human waste into the community.

By the time we had gone round the community, we had heard enough, the entire water- side quarters is reeking with squalor.

We meet with the chairman community development committee (CDC), Mr Preciouse Okujagu. He explained that the community had been enduring this problem for over 30 years. Their only access to water is through bore-hole and these bore-holes have to be drilled to the depth of over 150-200ft to access good water because water around the community is saline.

From PIGD observation, we can deduce that Azuabie Okujagu is truly indeed in need of urgent innervation in the area of provision of potable water, environmental re-engineering and provision of basic infrastructures. We are calling on reputable international organization and government to ameliorate their situation.
